Solution.
Instead of using traditional, time-consuming fibreglass lay-up tooling, the USA Luge team 3D printed a sled mould with FDM® technology using ASA thermoplastic. The mould design was adapted to fit the riders and finished in a few days. To make the complex doubles tower which the front rider sits on, the team 3D printed a lay-up mould using ST-130 sacrificial tooling material. The mould is wrapped in carbon fibre and after cure, the 3D printed material is washed away in a solution bath leaving the composite shape.
